Monday, March 22: 4-3 OT Win At Home vs. Colorado Avalanche
7:30pm: Game time. This begins the need for “playoff mode” attitude. No mercy.
9:40pm: Ryan Smyth scores to put the Kings ahead 3-2. Yes. Yes. Yes. Two points here we come.
9:55pm: Kings allow late goal with 10 seconds left to send game into overtime. Words which cannot be displayed on Bleacher Report. Is this really happening? Is the season unraveling before my eyes inside Staples Center?
10:02pm: Do the people behind me really not know that we are in OT?
10:05pm: “Cross-check! Penalty! Let’s go, pick it up!” (Motioning to crowd to stand up).
10:07pm: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! (Excessive fist pumping) Drew Doughty! You just surpassed Zach Parise as my hero! (Jubilant hugging and celebrating) How huge of cajones does it take for a 20-year-old to step up and beat an NHL goalie straight up on a slap-shot from the blue line? ~COUGH~Norris Trophy~COUGH~
Wednesday, March 24: 3-4 OT Loss @ Colorado Avalanche
6:15pm: Shot goes off Jack Johnson’s skate and past Jonathan Quick. 1-0 Avs. It’s OK boys, those goals happen. Let’s bounce back.
6:20pm: Anze Kopitar snags a rebound and rips a spinning back-hand shot past Craig Anderson. That’s how you come back! Keep it going…
6:25pm: High-sticking double minor against Brad Richardson, who’s stick was lifted by another Avs player and then hit Scott Hannan. “The rule states you must be in control of your own stick”. Damn it.
6:27pm: Milan Hedjuk scores power play goal. Avs up 2-1.
6:31pm: Sean O’Donnel called for cross-checking.
6:34pm: Fredrik Modin called for delay of game, shooting the puck over the glass from the defensive zone. Umm, you guys know you have to win this game, right?
6:36pm: Goal scored off of Drew Doughty’s stick as he tries to break up a pass. So far the count is: Goals which last touched Kings players—three. Goals which last touched Avs players—one. Only score that matters is Colorado up 3-1. And Jonathan Quick pulled because he must have hit a black cat with his car. Come on “Iceberg”!
6:40pm: Jack Johnson called for roughing—almost a boarding call on Paul Stastny. What is happening?
7:20pm: Two consecutive unsuccessful power-plays by the Kings. Score remains 3-1 at the end of second period. Dear God, no.
7:40pm: Drew Doughty scores a power-play goal 40 seconds into the third period. Drew, you can’t drink legally, but I love you. 15th goal of the year. Holy crap.
8:23pm: Jarret Stoll winds up—please hit the net—OH, actually just hit Alexandra Frolov’s stick…YES! How does it feel Colorado? 1:21 left in game, tied at three. Reverse deja vu: vuja de?
8:35pm: Kings are dominating this overtime. I don’t think the Avs even have any shots (final tally=0). We had better score here. I really don’t like facing Colorado’s shootout lineup, even without Wojtek Wolski.
8:40pm: Great. A goalie who’s started less than 10 games backstopping the shootout vs. Hedjuk, Mueller, and Stewart.
8:47pm: Ryan Smyth with a chance to keep it going against his old team…CLANG! What did that hit? Anderson looks pissed! Post! S***! He knew he was completely beaten!
Smyth skates straight into locker room. Incredibly tough loss against the worst team the Kings could lose to. Avs completely outplayed. Fortunately, Kings play again tomorrow night in St. Louis, who has the worst home record in the NHL. I got to get me to a bookie.
Thursday March 25: 3-1 Loss @ St. Louis Blues
5:05pm: Shoot! I forgot to lay down a bet. This game is a freebie, right?
5:11pm: Oh, Drewiskie is in the game. Oh, he just misplayed it on the blue-line pinch.. not to worry, it’s only Cromb…NO! Another weak start by the Kings? Blues up, 1-0.
5:18pm: Nice! Crombeen flips it over the glass, two min for delay of game. Redemption time…remember last night?
5:19pm: Ya, high-stick by Backes on Kopi! 5-3 for 41 seconds!
5:55pm: OK, let’s get a better start to the second period. Uh oh, Blues buzzing right now, get this puck out…no! Oshie! Great play on a rebound. Man can you just not re-sign with the Blues so the Kings can get you when you’re contract is up? Blues up 2-0.
6:30pm: Second period, no improvement.
6:55pm: Nice play Dustin! Shoot that puck more! Kings come within one on a Dustin Brown backhand roofer.
7:15pm: OK, this game is getting close here, Kings really need to so something ASAP to send this game to OT. Uh oh, Quick scrambling—blow the whistle! No way!
7:16pm: Ooh, that replay definitely shows the puck crossing the line. Nice try, Randy Jones. Next time get on your knees. Crap. 3-1 Blues now.
7:21pm: Great! Two goal deficit and the Kings take another penalty—WOW that was a marginal one-handed slash to call with five minutes left. Stellar.
7:30pm: Ughhhhh. 3-1 loss to the Blues.
Where was the offense? Here comes some line shuffling by Terry Murray. Maybe next game we’ll see Kopitar with Scott Parse and Fred Modin. Good grief, just give the Smyth-Williams-Kopitar combo some time to get it going and challenge the rest of the lines to bring it on their own!
Matt Greene—we need you back buddy!
Let’s all remember the NEW Kings mentality…that of WINNING. NOT the one of recent past, which was: No matter what, if anything is looking good, failure is around the corner.
These are the NEW Kings, and in the face of adversity they must overcome.
Magic number (points to secure playoff spot)=10.
This is not a time to worry about first round match-ups, or even how far the team might go should they make the postseason; this is a time to win at all costs, and get into playoff mode. It has been so since Monday, and it is essential not to let a little misfortune stand in the way of success.
I’m not on the ledge yet, but I’m looking for it on MapQuest (does anyone still use that anymore?) in case the Kings lose another two games.
